By Blaise Tracy, Director, Novitas Communications

I sat down to write about a campaign I’d run differently today and why.

Instead, I found myself thinking about all the campaigns I wouldn’t change.

That surprised me. So, I went with it.

The reason for my surprise was not because every project has been perfect — far from it — but because the work I’m doing now at Novitas Communications reminds me why I chose this industry in the first place.

PR and communications aren’t careers people stumble into because they want easy work. We choose this field because we love building something meaningful, solving problems creatively, and delivering results that matter. We thrive on collaboration, momentum, and yes — sometimes pressure.

At Novitas, those things come together in a way that feels rare.

What Keeps Great Work Moving

I believe long-term success in this business comes down to three things:

  • Respect for each other
  • Respect for clients and their goals
  • Genuine enjoyment of the work itself

True commitment to those basics can change everything.

Personally, I’ve always approached every role the same way: all in from day one. I believe in representing the team well, showing up prepared, and taking ownership of the work. Maybe that mindset was ingrained in me growing up, but it’s something I still value deeply today.

Of course, there are difficult days. Challenging clients. Tight timelines. Unexpected pivots. Anyone in PR knows that comes with the territory.

But once the dust settles, I always come back to the same realization: I’m grateful to do this work.

And for me, the reward has rarely been standing in the spotlight. Most of the satisfaction comes from building something behind-the-scenes that helps someone else shine.

Sometimes that means watching a successful event unfold from the edge of the room. Other times it’s seeing media coverage land exactly the way it should. Most often, it’s hearing excitement from a client who feels seen, understood, and supported.

Those moments matter.

What Defines Our Success

Success in communications doesn’t mean winning every time. It means showing up consistently, strategically, and thoughtfully.

At Novitas, I see three qualities that make that possible:

Perspective

One of the biggest strengths of our team is the range of experience around the table.

We’ve worked across industries, audiences, and challenges. That diversity of perspective helps us think more strategically and adapt more quickly.

Even as a small-to-mid-sized agency, we can scale in meaningful ways because our network, tools, and partnerships are extensive. When that experience aligns with a client’s vision, strong results usually follow.

Thorough

We don’t say yes casually. We say yes because we know how to execute.

And when we encounter something new, we dive in fully. We research, strategize, collaborate, refine, and follow through. That level of depth matters in PR because details matter.

We also still believe in relationships. We pick up the phone. We talk to reporters. We build trust over time. In today’s communications landscape, that approach still works — and always will. Plus, for me, it’s one of my favorite elements of business – the people.

Thoughtful

This one may matter most.

We care about the people we work with. Not performatively — genuinely.

That thoughtfulness shows up in how we communicate, how we problem-solve, and how we support each other internally and externally. Clients can feel the difference when a team is truly invested.

And honestly, it makes the work more rewarding for everyone involved.

So… What Campaign Would I Run Differently?

I’ll save that for another blog.

But maybe that’s the point.

Sometimes the more important reflection isn’t about what went wrong. It’s about recognizing what continues to work — and why.

For me, that answer comes back to good people, meaningful collaboration, and work worth caring about.

That’s what keeps me in this industry.
