Scholarship will support career development of students underrepresented in the public relations profession

DENVER (February 16, 2023) Building on its work with the Public Relations Society of America, Colorado Chapter encouraging diversity in the field of public relations, Novitas Communications today announced the new Novitas Diverse Voices Scholarship. The scholarship will help support the career development of historically underrepresented and marginalized students in pursuing a career in public relations and communications.

Novitas believes in the power of diversity to benefit the work of public relations professionals across the country. By asking students, “What impact do you believe the power of diverse PR voices can have on shaping the public narrative?” Novitas hopes to help passionate students find their footing in public relations.

“This has been in the works for some time, and we’re excited to open the inaugural scholarship up during Black History Month to celebrate the contributions of people of color as well as acknowledge the barriers they have faced and continue to face. This scholarship reflects Novitas’ belief that public relations and the stories we share as an industry will be better served by more voices lending their experience and expertise. We each need to personally step up and create the opportunities we want to see available for the next generation and we’re putting our money where our mouth is,” said Michelle Lyng, CEO of Novitas Communications.

The scholarship is open for applications from now until May 25 on Bold.org, an exclusive scholarship network. Applicants should be high school seniors or undergraduate students, and consider themselves low-income, first generation, BIPOC or LGBTQ+. The application can be found at bold.org/scholarships/novitas-diverse-voices-scholarship, and requires filling out basic information and answering an essay question. The winner will be announced June 25.

Previously, Novitas and its leadership worked with the Public Relations Society of America to create a program to encourage high school students to pursue careers in public relations, especially those not traditionally represented in the industry.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the public relations industry is 87.4% white, and 64.3% women.
